Extended leave from my regular employment made
it possible to realise my long-held dream of visiting Africa. I
arrived at Rocky Road in mid-2004, being immediately made to feel
at home by the WWISA team and the community members that I met as
we set about adding further weight to the regional village vegetable
gardening project. Regular hands-on, practical demonstration workshops
held for adults and scholars at the Rocky Road model nursery as
well as at villager homes introduced me to some wonderfully warm
people - folk who were keen and motivated to acquire skills and
knowledge that would make a positive difference to their tough township
lives. I loved it - and nine months surely flies when you're busy
& having fun! Back in Ireland one thing led to another, culminating
in my return to my "African Home" at Rocky Road for a
further long-term assignment in August 2005. Everything I experienced
- the warmth of the community, the fine friendships forged, the
mix of many fun-filled social events, the awesome scenery whilst
touring, the adrenalin rushing adventures - you name it - all of
them contributed to an unforgettable experience that I would highly
recommend - even for my children!
