I first came out to Kurland in 2003 and was awed
and moved by my experience that I vowed to myself to return. In
2003, I was part of a college group that spent two weeks working
on a community based environmental health education awareness programme;
dealing with adults and youth who just stole my heart! We ran hands-on
programmes for all ages, painting garbage bins, building refuse
pens, planting trees and removing loads of unwanted trash from throughout
the village. By mid-2004 I'd managed to organise my programme and
arrived back for a month, this time loaded with material to teach
lady members of the community introductory and advanced quilting
skills so that they could manufacture goods to sell at Women on
the Move. Once again I was impressed at the eagerness of the villagers
- who are just so warm and receptive - to acquire skills that would
make a difference to their lives.
Of course I also spent a lot of my leisure time touring the beautiful
region and the many different fun spots with Mac and Rocky of the
WWISA team. They are wonderful hosts who made me feel fully at home
at Rocky Road. They gave me memories I'll never forget from both
my visits and I've already warned them that I'll be visiting them
again! I just can't wait.
